about

Jens Carelius, from Sandvika just outside of Oslo, released his debut album, The First Songs, in January 2008. It received good reviews in most Norwegian newspapers.

Monday August 17th sees the release of his second album, The Beat Of The Travel, on the newly-founded record label Viking Records.

The Beat Of The Travel is a natural progression from his debut, and the subdued and folk-inspired sound is broadened with richer arrangements and melodies. This record is a natural result of frequent live performances in the first release’s aftermath. Carelius quickly became comfortable in the company of a band. This setting largely shaped the songs he wrote for this album. ”A large contrast between this and the previous record is my progress as a vocalist. My voice has now a much wider range than before, as a consequence of all my live performances”, he says himself.

Still, Carelius’ most distinct feature is his focus on the lyrics. ”I spend quite a lot of time on lyrics, both because I find it challenging, and because I feel that my art distinguishes itself by the very fact that I spend that much time on the sound of my lyrics. I am not a poet, but I still feel that this is my greatest driving force; being able to write good lyrics in English.” The music on the album also varies with the lyrics; you will hear songs solely accompanied by folk guitar, waltzes with horns and strings, and pop and rock-inspired tunes.

The album is presented as a journey, hence the name The Beat Of The Travel. The songs present large contrasts to its listener, from mellow folk and blues guitar, via up-tempo pop and rock to sing-along tunes and harmonies.

5/6 ”This brilliant, tinkling pop-treat has Cat Stevens written all over it, with slight psych-overtones and a tiny guitar indulgence towards the end. The second album is released August 17th; an outsider among album releases in 2009.” - The first single Face Of A Dream, as reviewed by Norwegian daily newspaper Dagbladet in June 2009
